SHS Counseling Mission/Vision Statement
The Sunset High School Counseling Department is committed to supporting the Beaverton School District Goal for 2009-14:
"All students will show continuous progress toward their personal learning goals, developed in collaboration with teachers and parents, and will be prepared for post-secondary education and career success."
In addition, we share and support the mission of Beaverton School District’s Comprehensive School Counseling Program:
“As an integral part of the total educational program, the mission of the Beaverton School District's Comprehensive School Counseling Program is to advocate courageously for the academic success, for the well being and the widest range of post secondary options for each student. The Beaverton School District Comprehensive School Counseling Program, in collaboration with parents and staff, will empower and assist each student in developing skills to be a successful learner and a healthy, valuable citizen in a diverse society.”
In order to support the goals stated above, Sunset High School offers a comprehensive guidance and counseling program designed to support the developmental needs of all students. To further consistencies in our practice we are committed to collaborate by region and level with counselors across the district. The school counseling program at Sunset High School facilitates student development in three broad areas: Academic, Career, and Personal/Social. The three areas are based on the American School Counseling Association's national model. The following services are some of those included in the total guidance and counseling program:
Academic: Counselors meet with their designated advisory classes on an ongoing basis. We provide support and supplemental information to the teachers. Counselors facilitate presentations in career guidance, college planning, academic forecasting, study skills, post high school planning and maintaining academic success. In the broader context of Sunset High School, we also provide student transition support and information about tutors. The goal in this domain is to support student learning and success.
Personal/Social: Counselors take a holistic view toward adolescent development and are in a unique position to view the whole child. Students are encouraged to seek counseling assistance when personal concerns arise. Individual and group counseling, crisis intervention and referral services are available. Students can contact their School Counselor, School Psychologist, or our Prevention/Intervention Specialist. The goal in this domain is to support healthy student development as well as to create socially responsible citizens of the world.
Career/Post High School: Counselors work with students and their advisory teachers to develop four year plans and profiles. Counselors provide resources and guidance supporting the student to reach his/her goals individually and systemically. Advisory lessons for all grade levels have a post high school planning component. All grades incorporate the Career Information System (CIS) program into the curriculum. In addition, students complete career education components such as developing and completing a job application, resume, and participation in a mock interview. The goal of this domain is for students to identify post high school goals and the steps necessary to reach their goals.
